L-Theanine

Editorial illustration of green tea, relaxation, and restful sleep representing L-theanine and its potential relationship with sleep quality.

What it is

L-theanine is an amino acid found in tea and sold in supplements. It is distinct from the caffeine that can also be present in tea. Drinking tea, using isolated L-theanine, and taking a multi-ingredient nighttime formula produce different exposures; a product containing theanine is not automatically comparable to a trial of the isolated compound.

Why people look for it

Interest spans relaxation, sleep, and attention. The research question changes when theanine is combined with caffeine, so the sleep and focus articles provide separate paths.

What research generally looks at

Human studies have examined sleep outcomes, stress-related measures, and short-term attention tasks. Some test theanine alone and others test combinations; a result against placebo does not necessarily demonstrate an advantage over caffeine alone.

Important context

Preparation, dose, comparison group, and timing affect interpretation. Theanine should not be assumed to cancel caffeine-related sleep disruption or make a stimulant suitable for everyone. Choose the comparison that matches the question rather than treating relaxation and alertness as the same outcome.
